Managing Business Relationships

At a point in time when digital communication is taking the lead in the business world, it's more important than ever to examine how you are managing your business relationships. The time you actually spend face-to-face with people now means more than ever since, you may see some of these people only once every few months due to virtual work.

Figuring out how to say things clearly without sounding too blunt can be simple when you add smiles and nods, but what about when all you have is the text in your email? How can you be sure to say the right things without coming across as rude or being too unclear about what needs to get done?

Email Etiquette: When emailing people about things that need to be done consider starting the email by thanking them for the last thing they've done for you. You can bring up an old project you worked on together or even bring up a project they worked on with someone else. Then, get into a full description of what needs to be completed and close by explaining how you're looking forward to seeing the work they produce.

Empower Your Coworkers: You don't have to be a manager to let someone know if they've done a good job. If you see someone close an "impossible deal," exceed in their KPIs, or suggest a new innovative idea let them know they've done well. Your coworkers will see you as more of a team player and will be more willing and more excited to work with you in the future.

Speak Up: The business world is a world full of competition and bold people, and for some, the competitiveness can be awfully intimidating. You can't let other people voice their ideas while you sit in the back and smile. The other members of your team will always appreciate you actually participating in the conversation and they'll remember you for it.

And lastly, I'm sure you saw it coming, NETWORK! Learn about other people's businesses and show them what you have to offer as well. The most important part of this strategy is to be genuine. Actually, be present in these conversations and see what they have to offer from their point of view.
